Rua’s suit gives a rare glimpse into Shakira’s career and seeks damage of a minimum of $100 million for breach of fiduciary duty and contract
December 4, 2012 – Shakira was sued by her former boyfriend for $100 million. Antonio de la Rua alleged in his lawsuit that Shakira rose to fame from Latin America singing star to a global superstar due to hard work, risky artistic moves, great management decisions and love.
The lawsuit said that the marketing and business talents of Rua together with the artistic talent, sex appeal and beauty of Shakira, propelled the partnership value well beyond anything either one had achieved previously or believed was possible.
De la Rua is looking to recover what is due him from the past and their profits for their partnership for the future, said the court documents that were filed in New York at the Supreme Court.
Rua’s suit gives a rare glimpse into Shakira’s career and seeks damage of a minimum of $100 million for breach of fiduciary duty and contract. The suit says Rua is owed the monies as part of a standing management deal he has with Shakira, although no written contract or agreement was every signed.
The suit alleges that in 2004 Shakira and de la Rua’s romance started their business relationship following a world tour where Shakira lost millions. De la Rua is alleged to have agreed to be her business partner and head all her businesses. However, no written agreement was signed governing the partnership.
Through 2010, Rua said that he helped her to earn millions of dollars and helped her earn future profits thanks to his negotiating of contracts. The relationship was solid between the two in 2010 even when the romance stopped, according to court documents. The suit says that Shakira posted on her website that the two of them were still partners in their professional and business lives.
However, just a year later, Shakira told her attorney to end her relationship with de la Rua. Shakira’s representatives have made no comment regarding the suit.
