Men in Black 3 is the new king of the box office.
May 28, 2012- The combination of Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith was able to outgun, outwit and out earn Captain America and Iron Man over the weekend. The sequel, Men in Black 3, won the holiday weekend with over $55 million in box office receipts from Friday through Sunday.
That bumped The Avengers down to second place following three spectacular weekends on the top of the heap. Nevertheless, the superhero film still took in an impressive $37 million over the weekend to increase its domestic take to $514 million. It became just the fourth film of all time to earn over $500,000,000.
Sony, the distributor for the MIB 3 said it thought the full four-day Memorial Day weekend total would exceed $70 million in domestic sales and over $202 million globally. Battleship, last week’s number two film dropped to third place this week with $10.8 million increasing its domestic income to $44.3 million. The Dictator by Paramount earned $9.6 million to take fourth place in only its second weekend lifting its domestic take to $41.5 million. Chernobyl Diaries, the horror film from Warner Bros. debuted in fifth place for the weekend with $8 million.
MIB 3 has debuted higher than its two previous predecessors have, each of them took in just over $50 million during their first three day weekend.
