General Hospital Takes Home Five Daytime Emmys

The long running soap opera General Hospital has won five daytime Emmy awards.

June 24, 2012 General Hospital, the long running daytime soap opera took home five daytime Emmys on Saturday evening in Beverley Hills, including the year’s best drama. The awards show also gave a warm send off to Regis Philbin, the talk show host who recently announced he was leaving daytime TV.

Best morning show went to the Today show from NBC and Jeopardy, the syndicated game show, won best game show. The Live with Regis and Kelly Show won for the best entertainment show and for the best two talk-show hosts. Last November, Philbin announced he was leaving the show, but a replacement has not be named as of yet.

The best lead actress award went to Heather Tom from The Bold and the Beautiful. She made history for being the first daytime Emmy winner in the best actress category after previously winning for best young actress and best supporting actress.

Lead actor went to Anthony Geary from General Hospital. The show from ABC also won best supporting actor and actress and directing team.

Dr. Oz received an Emmy for the best informative show. The show was held in Beverley Hills and was the 39th year the awards have been given out for daytime television. After airing the last two years on CBS, last night’s show was on HLN channel.

The presentation was held at the Beverley Hilton where only hours before the show a murder-suicide reportedly took place and where Whitney Houston died this past February.
