June 27, 2013 - Kyle Wiltjer a forward on the University of Kentucky basketball team posted a letter on Monday on the school’s athletic department website saying he would seek a new situation that would help him compete how he knows he can, wherever that might be.

This summer Wiltjer, who is 6-foot-10 played with the developmental national team of Canada.

In April, he said he was returning to Kentucky in the fall to play in his junior season. However, on Monday, Wiltjer said he had taken on some new as well as adjusted goals after his dreams of winning an NCAA national championship had been fulfilled while he was a freshman with the Wildcats.

This year, Kentucky signed eight freshmen, including six who are McDonald’s All-Americans.

John Calipari the Head Coach at Kentucky expressed his disappointment over the decision Wiltjer made to leave the Wildcats but wished him all the luck in the world.

Calipari said Wiltjer has the skills, mentality and length to be able to play professionally but had to develop more physically.

Coach Calipari credited Wiltjer for progress he had made during his two seasons with Kentucky. He said Kyle went from the seventh man on the squad’s national championship team to the SEC’s Sixth Man of the Year.

Calipari said that over the next two seasons he knows that Wiltjer will develop into the player he knew he would eventually become, but said that it was unfortunate it would not be at Kentucky.

Wiltjer is a native of Oregon, whose father is Canadian and carries dual citizenship. He averaged his sophomore year 10.3 points and 4.3 rebounds a game.

The Kentucky coaching staff was hoping that Wiltjer would provide leadership and experience for the incoming freshman.

Wiltjer said it was very hard for him to leave, yet he said he was confident that the decision would be the best overall for his basketball future.
