United Kingdom has fewest Public and Paid Holiday in Europe

March 28, 2013- Of 12 nations surveyed in Europe, the average public holiday and leave entitlement was 33 days in Europe, which means that UK workers lose out on a full working week away from the stress of the office. Germany, Switzerland and Ireland are next lowest with only 28 days, just a single day more than those in the UK.

New research recently released reveals that many discrepancies in public and paid holidays across the continent. When both public holidays and annual leave are looked at across the entire European Union, Britons are at the bottom of the table, with a minimum of just 28 days’ holiday compared to Italy and Russia, who are at the top, with 36 and 40 days for holidays respectively.

A number of bank holidays exist throughout Europe, with Russia, Italy and Spain in front in that category with 12 days apiece. In contrast, Britain had the fewest public holidays with eight.

Overall, on a global scale, the lowest total public and paid holidays is Mexico with only 13 days that workers receive, which is nearly 30 days fewer than the number one country throughout Europe, Russia with 40. While workers in Britain received 20 days leave annually, countries such as Taiwan, Thailand and China received 7, 6 and 5 days leave each year.

The rates of days off for public holidays and leave vary throughout the world. While Russia leads the way with a total of 40 work days of rest available to workers, places like Mexico have far less time off to enjoy with just 13 spread out between its public holidays and leave.
