January 27, 2013- A fire that broke out inside a nightclub in the early morning hours on Sunday in Brazil has killed at least 200 people. The blaze took place in the southern Brazil city of Santa Maria after a band’s pyrotechnics show set the interior of the nightclub ablaze.

As of early Sunday morning, firefighters and rescue crews were still bringing bodies out of the nightclub. The nightclub where the fire took place is named Boate Kiss.

One official at the scene said that thus far 159 bodies had been taken out of the club and that there most likely would be over 200 in all. Firefighters said the majority of victims had died due to smoke inhalation, asphyxiation and from being trampled over. By eyewitness accounts, there were more than 500 people inside the club at the time of the blaze.

A police official from the city of Santa Maria said the blaze started after one of the members of a band or someone in the band’s production team lit a flare. The flare, said the police official, set the nightclub’s ceiling on fire and that allowed the fire to spread in just seconds.

The fire took place at about 2 a.m. at a time when the nightclub was at top capacity. The panic caused people to push and shove and many were trampled over when they could not withstand the pressure from behind them.

Santa Maria is located about 187 miles to the west of Porto Alegre the state capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The health inspector from the state said hospitals from across the state were sending respirators for those who survived.

Officials were using the Municipal Sports Center as a temporary morgue so family can come and identify the bodies.

Santa Maria borders both Uruguay and Argentina and is a popular university city with a population of approximately 250,000.
